Wonder, Observe, Work and Imagine: Bayview Unveils New Learning Lab

On Oct. 14, Bayview Elementary School celebrated the grand opening of its new WOWI Learning Lab, a flexible learning environment designed to provide students with opportunities to learn, explore, collaborate and grow.
Members of the West Islip School District Board of Education, administration, PTA and nonprofit organization Women of West Islip joined students and staff for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of the new learning space. The lab was made possible through a generous donation from WOWI last year, which provided the funding needed to transform the space into a flexible and inviting environment for students and teachers.
“We want to begin by expressing our sincere gratitude to the Women of West Islip,” said Bayview Principal John Mullins, alongside Bayview teachers Kristen Hannigan and Regina Hartnett, who spearheaded the room’s renovations. “Your generous donation made this vision possible. What started as an idea became something we could truly bring to life because of your support and belief in our students.”
The development of the learning lab was a collaborative process. School staff consulted with teachers, educational consultants and other stakeholders to identify features that would best support students and teachers. The goal was to create more than a room simply filled with flexible furniture, but rather an intentional learning environment designed around the needs of the school community.
The WOWI donation helped make that vision a reality. The space includes standing desks, Bouncyband chairs, comfortable and flexible seating, areas for collaboration and quiet work, and a variety of materials designed to make the room welcoming and inspiring.
Because the space was created for student use, third through fifth graders were invited to submit ideas for its name. After collecting their creative suggestions, younger students voted for their favorite. The winning name, the WOWI Learning Lab, stands for Wonder, Observe, Work and Imagine — the four concepts that reflect the goals of the new learning environment.
The grand opening provided an opportunity for members of the school community to see the WOWI Learning Lab in action and celebrate the collaboration and generosity that made the new learning environment possible. The district looks forward to seeing students continue to use the space to wonder, observe, work and imagine.
