District Goals and Objectives

OBJECTIVES:

• Update policies and protocols as required by law and Commissioner's Regulations and NYSSBA recommendations
• Provide Board trustees with ongoing mentorship, including information and training related to the business, finance and advocacy functions of the school district
• Create a fiscally responsible and efficient budget that maintains and enhances the integrity of all programs in a manner that is sensitive to the financial constraints of stakeholders
• Respond to school safety and security-related matters as prescribed by federal, state and local requirements
• Form strategic partnerships to advocate for budget reform at both the state and federal levels.

OBJECTIVES:

• Partner with community groups and stakeholders to support and enhance school programs
• Utilize the district website and social media pages to celebrate the accomplishments of students and staff
• Continue to foster a school environment where all students and staff are supported through learning experiences and programs that cultivate respect, understanding, and compassion, while providing opportunities for every individual to succeed in a safe and supportive space.
• Host district events to educate the community on programs and supports available throughout the district
• Gather feedback from families regarding their experience in the district

OBJECTIVES:

• Further embed the West Islip and New York State Profile of a Graduate into our instructional practices in all subject areasto ensure a rigorous and consistent academic environment focused on developing the skills, knowledge, habits and attitudes that students need to be successful in their future
• Provide ongoing professional development in the area of (1) foundational literacy acquisition, with a focus on structured, explicit and multi-sensory methods; and (2) identification of students who may benefit from this approach
• Embed strategies within our instructional program to help students develop proactive methods for supporting their own mental health and wellness
• Continue to explore and expand equitable, standards-based grading practices to ensure continuity of grading practices in courses and grade levels.
• Continue to strengthen our Tier 1 instructional practices to help students achieve optimal learning outcomes
• Explore alternatives to the traditional assessment model by incorporating project and performance based learning opportunities for students 
• Utilize feedback and achievement data to guide instructional decisions, determine necessary professional development for staff, and refine course offerings to ensure all students meet with success
• Incorporate relevant and meaningful learning experiences at the local and global level through industry partnerships, skill based programs and experiential travel opportunities
• Continue to explore and implement mastery learning techniques to ensure that every student has the opportunity to achieve a more thorough understanding of the course content before progressing to more advanced concepts
• Prepare the district for the transition to New York State’s emerging competency-based education and graduation framework prioritizing ways that students can demonstrate mastery of learning by showcasing the skills and knowledge they have acquired throughout the school year
• Increase overall awareness of the Blue Ribbon Commission’s recommended changes to diploma requirements, assessments, and coursework
• Further enhance our Career and Technical Education (CTE) program through the expansion of work-based learning opportunities and industry partnerships 
• Highlight and further develop our focus on mental health supports and education across all buildings and grade levels.
• Expand and enhance opportunities for gifted and high-achieving students through enriched, accelerated, and innovative learning experiences that foster intellectual curiosity, creativity, and academic excellence. 
• Increase district-wide awareness, understanding, and capacity to effectively support neurodivergent learners through professional learning, inclusive practices, and collaborative approaches that recognize and respond to diverse learning needs.

• Ensure ongoing training, emergency preparedness, and collaboration with local agencies to safeguard students and staff

• Continue the meaningful integration of the district's "AI Vision Statement" throughout our educational practices
• Effectively implement the NYS Computer Science and Digital Fluency Standards to equip students with essential 21st-century skills and foster a deeper understanding of technology
• Align technology competencies across grade levels to ensure a coherent and progressive development of digital skills throughout the educational journey
• Explore and implement thoughtful approaches to limiting student screen time and promoting balanced technology use that supports student engagement, well-being, learning, and meaningful interpersonal connection.
